Which 400 motors in 77 TA
« on: March 18, 2008, 09:29:31 PM »
hi, I have a 77 TA Ineed to know which 400 motors will match up? I was told that earlier year 400's might not work. I want to be sure the transmission stick (4 speed) and shaker scoop will work. I might be able to get my hands on a 400 4barrel from a 69 Cataliina. My question is ,will it work?

I think the motor mounts on anything before 70 or 71 are different, but everything else is a strait shot.

It can work. Get the mounts for the engine and car that it came from. Then it's a matter of dropping the engine into the car so that it mates up to the tranny crossmember. Get it set good and solid on some blocks and test fit the shaker. Then trial fit the mounts to the block and mark the location of the holes on the frame. Then you can pull it out and drill the holes you'd need to fit it right. Remember, test and measure a couple times so you only have to drill it once. ;)

I had a '70 400 bolted up to the '77 T/A I bought. I'm pretty sure the Pontiac block had two different sets of bolt holes cast into the block for different motor mounts so the factory could use the motor in a variety of cars, just by changing motor mounts. if you use the T/A motor mounts, they should bolt right up and fit. So, my answer would be yes... only question i would have is about the deck height of the intake, to allow the shaker to fit right. I have a '70 intake on mine now, but i'm using the Edelbrock carb, so my fitment for the shaker is a whole nother story..... if you can get the depths of the 69 intake vs a '77 intake, you will have your complete answer......
oh...... and the '70 400 that was in it came from a "B" platform car...... Catalina, Bonneville........Executive....

Hi,  everyone. First, I want to thank everyone for making me feel welcome. I have been a visiter to the site many times over the last year or two. I picked up my TA 2 years ago. The car is in my driveway and I have 2 motors and a 4 speed trans sitting in my garage. The problem is the motors are all apart. Both blocks are 500557 block codes. One motor has a x4 engine code. The other one, I can't find the code. I was told it is a 455. I thought that if I got the 400 out of the "69", I could get away cheap, instead of having one of the others rebuilt. I guest I'm going to have to go the rebuild route. As for the pictures that rkellerjr was asking for. It is not much to look at now. It's black on black, with t-tops. It's not an SE. Very stock. Not banged up too bad. I'll work on the pictures. Not to good with the computer. Thanks again for the information, you all have been very helpful.

Has anyone used these conversion mounts?  Are there others available?  I purchased a '69 400 RAIII motor and plan to install into my '77.  The guy who sold me the motor suggested using this kit.
