Will a Chevy 400 from a 78 G30 Van bolt into my 79 T/A ?
« on: April 17, 2008, 08:43:49 AM »
I own a 79 T/A with a 403 engine. I want to keep the original motor and put a newly rebuilt CHEVY 400 I took from my 78 G30 Van. I have not taken the motor out of the T/A yet and would like to know if I will have problems mounting the 400 in the T/A ..I also had the 350 tranny rebuilt from the 78 G30. Would that tranny bolt into the T/A ?? The T/A has the original automatic tranny in it now.

The Chevy 400 you have is most likely the small block version.  It would fit, but you'd have to have all the stuff from a 305 powered TA to do it.  The transmission you have it a "BOP" pattern transmission and it won't bolt up directly to the SBC.  You'll need either a different TH350 ("Chevy" pattern) or an adapter plate to make it fit.

Sure, it will fit. And as long as you have everything from the van that you can use (all the accessories and brackets) then the only real thing is that you'll have to relocate the motor mounts bolted to the frame to different holes as far as the engine goes. Since it has a TH350 it will bolt right in because the T/A would have had the same one. Since you're using the van's tranny the bolt pattern won't matter. The senario Rick mentions is only if you were going to use the tranny that was originally in the T/A.

the bolt holes are in the cross member as in the later years of the f body they punched all the holes in the crossmembers for the available engines , you might have a problem with the frame stands as the gm truck line uses a taller lower mount on trucks . just use the lowers from a camaro
