Fastest production T/A ever built.....................1989 Turbo T/A Pace Car.  The car needed NO modifications other than pace lights and a roll bar to pace the Indy 500.

I must have smokey ad the bandit syndrome, because when I hit the interstate in my formula I berry my 85 MPH speedo. ;D.I would feel a little safer in a T/A at really high speeds because of the front spoiler. The reason is,me and a friend tweeked his 95 junktang GT,ran about 130 Mph.The next day we had it on the lift and for some reason we took the little air dam ( about 2 foot wide and 2 inches tall) off,ran it again and it got sloppy at about 120 MPH.We put it back on and hit 135 Mph.Its amazing what a little piece of plastic will do. Isnt that what all the spoilers and air dams on the trans ams are for, better control at high speeds?

They were intended for that purpose on the original design, but I don't believe they were ever tested again -- particularly after the front end was substantially redesigned for the 1974 model year DOT low speed collision requirements.  By that time it was NOT PC to build cars that seriously exceeded the speed limit (there were serious discussions of Congress passing bills to require the use of governors on new cars limiting them to no more than 85 MPH), and GM/Pontiac had decided to quit putting money into performance (hence, the expiration of the SD option at the end of the 74 model year when emission regulations changed -- GM wouldn't put money into a recertification of the SD engine).  To this day I believe that the Trans Am was to end with the 75 model year but they kept it alive for the 76 year, and then Hollywood made "Smokey & The Bandit" and the marque was revived.

Although the ground effects were functional to start with, after 74 their functionality was never tested and they were retained only for the marketing value in differentiating the car from lower trim levels of Firebirds.  The 74-76s seemed to remain fairly stable at speed by I have heard reports from some with later cars that they "floated" at higher speeds, most likely due to the redesign of the front ends in the 77-78s and the 79-81s.

my moms aurora's speedo goes up to 240 and i highly doubt that it can come close.

240 kph not mph. 240 kph is about 150 mph.

1978 manual 400 T/A had a top speed of 123 or 132 according to Road and Track . that is with 3.23 rears and stopping at redline which I believe to be accurate. that fastest production T/A are the 4th gens followed by the 1989 TTA and the SD's.

In 1979 car and driver got a 1979 400 4spd 3.23 T/A to do 132mph at red line, do you need to go that fast, NO the cars to pretty to begin with to worry about that kind of speed.

Here are a couple of interesting quotes from the Gary Lisk 2nd generation Trans Am page about the 79's speed, with reference to it's aerodynamics in the 2nd paragraph:

As for the final iteration of the 400 (coded WH ), the rear end gearing was scaled back to 3.23:1, again for fuel economy, but this also allowed the '79's to go a bit faster on the top end. During road testing Car & Driver magazine sent the tach past the 5000-rpm redline to reach 132 mph at 5400 rpm. This was one of the last cars whose top speed was gearing limited rather than drag limited. The engine was still willing and trust me, has enough torque (320 lb/ft @2800 rpm) to take off in third gear, when brain faded individuals such as myself pick the wrong gear. (As much as the Hurst shifter impresses the heck out nearly everyone who sees the gleaming chrome stalk, it doesn't work as good as it looks!)

Performance wise, the 1979 edition made some impressive gains. Due to the slightly higher gearing, the 220hp engine was a bit slower in the quarter mile, taking 15.3 seconds to cover the distance, a tenth slower than the '78. The better aerodynamics came in to play with a higher trap speed of 96.6 mph, 3.2 miles per hour quicker than the '78. The 0-60 mph times for the '79 picked up a half second requiring 6.7 seconds for the sprint. The new four wheel disc brakes of the WS6 cars knocked a yard from the stopping distance, bringing the Trans Am down from 60 mph in only 146 feet. In February of 1979, Hot Rod magazine tested a Pontiac Engineering prepared "press car". This car may have been a warmed over "ringer" as the T/A 6.6 powered 4-speed thundered down the quarter mile in 14.61 seconds @ 96.67 mph. Even HRM admitted that a typical TA of this type could expect time slips in the 15.30 range.

so theyre saying the 79 had a bit left in it even at 132......not bad with that horrible exhaust.....   of course, with the tech upgrades the 4th gens could top that

 >:D Indicated 120mph when chasing & eventually passing a Plymouth Barracuda on the way back from a car show, he was trying to 'play' with me for miles, then he overtook me whilst waving out of the window....my right hoof then went floorwards. When i pulled in back in front of him....i may have uttered the words 'Have some of that'....i lifted at 120mph, but i dont think it had quite finished yet, of course i dont really know how accurate the speedo is! It didnt really seem to mind doing it to much though...

Came across this on another forum. I would supposed a 70 Ram air IV Trans am would be the fastest
