Title: PCV Valve replacement on a 1978 Trans Am 400 cui
Post by: spalku on September 06, 2009, 08:35:13 AM
Hello!
I have one question to you.

Since May 2009 i`m a proud owner of a 1978 Trans Am 6.6 . It runs quite well!!! Now i want to do some maintainance. I must explain, that i haven`t done any maintainace on a car quite yet.  :-[

Now I want to change the PCV Valve but i don`t now how to put it into the right direction. I ordered a new one (its a Purolator  PV 679). One side of the rod inside the valve is signded with an "A". The old valve which is still in the car, has the "A"- side pointing to the carbuterator joined with a hose, but the valve doesn`t fit quite well in the grommet in the intake manifold.
Is this direction/ position right, or has the "A" side point to the intake manifold?
Thank you for a short answer!!!
Best regards from Germany!!!
Marko

Congrats on the purchase ... post some pix.

I want to say you can blow in it to check - it only goes one way.  Also, be careful of the grommet - they typically get real brittle with age.

Thank you very much- i know that the valve goes in only one way, but which ist the right way?
If the pressure comes from the intake manifold - should it open and blow the gases out into the carbuterator?

The larger end should go into the crankcase, while the smaller end goes to the carb.

Thats right, the larger end goes into the valley pan while the smaller end connects to the manifold vac.

Be careful!  I broke the grommet off in the valley pan and had to remove my intake and pan to pry it out!  Don't let that happen, it's a pain!

Hello!
First of all i want to thank you for your fast answers!!!
Now i made some photos to show you my "problem"  ;)
The first picture ist the old valve which does not fit correctly in the grommet. Now i think it was false installed the whole time.

The second picture is the new valve.
I signed the ends of the valve in which way i would mount the valve. i hope thats right.
Thank you!

Your second picture is labeled correctly. Definitely a press fit and the grommet in the valley pan does get brittle so be prepared to expand your vocabulary if it breaks into itty bitty pieces.

Put some wd40 or engine oil on the grommet and pvc so that it will slide in easier. Maybe that will help to avoid breaking it.

Everything was perfect!!!
The grommet didn`t break and it took only 15 minutes.
Thank you very much for your tips!
