So anyone know how these things attach to the car?
I have seen ones with screws, ones that stick on? Which is correct?
Thanks.

From what I have been told the correct one is the ones that have the adhesive on the back.

That's right - adhesive is correct for a 78.

BE sure and look those emblems over really carefully before you decide to buy them. They are really poor examples of the originals floating around out there. The bird is like die-cut and glued into the metal emblem and they do not have the clear glue like expoxy over them either. I'm sure the ones Brett uses are a better quality tho.

I will check on the prices later on today.  Here are a couple of quick photos between the original bird and the reproductions.

Oh the repos are TOTALLY different.....

Maybe I can land an old set from someone??? And refinish them?

Or is that impossible?

I bought a set of originals on ebay about 6 months ago. The color and clear covering had been totally removed which is what I wanted (paid $12 + $6 shipping). My intent is to refinish them but I haven't devised a way to lay the red color in. The red lays down between some fine ribs in the wings so it might be difficult to get a good clean look where the red is concerned. The black shouldn't be too much of a problem because that area is more open and flat. If I'm successful with the colored portions, I'll overlay it with crystal clear epoxy (the kind you see that has a bug or marble or something embedded in it). That's the plan. If I ever get around to it, I'll post the result.

About three years ago, I bought sail panel birds from NPD (like the second pic posted by Hitman). At the time, I didn't realize that they were different than the originals. My originals were stolen off my car back around 1980 so I hadn't seen sail panel birds up close and in person for 20 years. I thought the NPD offereings were the same as the original. It wasn't until a couple of years after purchasing the NPD version that I learned they were different. They look ok on the car but, as you can see, they are different than the originals. I'd love to find a good set of intact originals but they can be relatively expensive on ebay.

It appears that all the pictures are no longer available.  I did copy the narrative and some of the pictures to a word document...that I'll gladly sell to anyone interested for $100... :D

If you want it send me an email and I'll send you a copy and I'll waive the $100 charge for the first 100 lucky people. :D
