Resto Stages??
« on: October 15, 2007, 05:46:55 PM »
Hello,

I am 19 and recently bought '78 Trans Am for $500, I probably could have gotten one in better shape for the same amount of money but this called to me.  Anyways, what is the best plan of attack for someone on a budget to go for a restoration and their first restoration ever.

My current plan is as Follows:

1) Anything and everthing under the hood (i.e hoses, transmission, fluids, belts, etc) making sure all that is in tip top

2) All the current rust damage ( The passenger floor pan, the passenger door, 1/4, etc)

3) Interior (Cartpet, Dash, Center Console, Seats, Head Liner, etc)

4) Exterior ( Paint and decals, Restore the Original SnowFlakes, and trappings)

5) Performance ( Start on the performace aspect under the hood)

This is a rough outline of what I am planning to do.  I understand that I should have a professional do the rust and body work but mostly since this is my first car ever restoring I thought I would run it through the channels to make sure that I am not starting in the wrong place.

-Thanks for any support I will hopefull have some pictures up.

Sounds like you have a good plan on it. Are you going original or modified? Don't forget the wiring.

Sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the BUG!

I am not to sure on the look just yet but I like the Black and gold Smokey and The Bandit look so I may go for that black and gold paint job and the gold Phoenix.

I know I will have to rewire the gauge cluster cause right now my Tac and MPH gauges aren't working everything else seems ok but I won't know for sure until I take off the dash bezels and cover.

But like I said I will get some pictures up so everyone can take a look and I can get an experience opinion on what I have on my hands.

FWIW, check to make sure the cable is hooked up to the back of the gauge cluster. You can do this by reaching up under the dash, and feeling around on the back of where the guage cluster will be. Since it's mechanical, it's a pretty basic system.

I can't remember if the tach is ran off the printed circuit board, I don't think it is but I can't say for sure.

I live in southern California.  There isn't much room out here but we would welcome everyone with a smile and a middle finger. LOL There is much to do on the Trans though. So basically I bought and engine.

I live in two places one for work and the other for the Trans Am.  The Trans Am is about a 30 min drive from me and I will have pics up this weekend Promise!
