Very informative post!  On the cracks, would it be a good idea to also weld a small plate over the area for added strength?

Added strength?? What exactly do you plan on doing to those seats?  :o ;)

Ummmm...Jeff?  If you hadn't looked recently, there ain't many of us who have as much seat left over as we did back in the day...probably a good idea to call a spade a spade and head off the next round of trouble...:D ;)

The cracks happen at stress points.  Welding a small strap would spread the stress.

most common welding wire is rated at 70,000 psi tensile strength with the proper heat and penetration there wont be any need for any additional metal, because it would be the strongest part of the entire seat frame....so why waste the time and effort in putting  a strap of metal over a crack...the best thing and easiest would be to drill a 1/8 hole at the end of the crack to prevent it from ever spreading, then weld it all completely up.....both sides.....
