This is what I have done so far to test the alternator.
I did put a screwdriver to it and there is a slight magnetic pull.
Then I took off the + side of the batt and the car died.
So even though there is a magnetic pull but the car dies after + side is pulled
off, is the alternator is still bad?

All wires are good, good ground starter and engine block.
Going to have the alt tested today but still would like to know what members think about this.

I have a 1980 T/A, 301.

Reason for asking this, volt gauges fluctuates, then goes to red, radio and all inside lights go out including gauge lights.
Car eventually sputters and dies.
Choke light has been on now for over 1 yr.  Most posts say cause is bad alternator.
Has new battery and had it checked and tested ok.
Does the alternator have to be on car to get tested?  Is auto zone a good place for alt test?
This just started happening one month ago.
Any ideas?

While I am here let me ask, I see a black button that is encased by a
small metal  case that is to the right of the carburetor and under the air
cleaner.  It has a pigtail connection that goes to it.
Do you know what this called and what it does?

Thank you for your time.
