new owner of 79 T/A 4 speed, tranny question
« on: January 01, 2009, 07:14:37 PM »
Hello, thank you for providing this site.
I just bought the vehicle and it has a 4speed with a handle that has HURST written on it and by the side of the stick. Is the tranny a BW super T10/ muncie 4spd or ?. According to PO the car has 63k original miles but vin states the engine is  a 301 ???. It is a non t-top car
VIN is 2W87W9N157007

PO had it listed as a 6.6 litre V8...........

First off, welcome to the site. By PO do you mean previous owner? The trans should be a BW  T10, but the stick itself was a hurst item.

I believe there were alot more 301 stick cars than 400's.

I know where there's a Heritage Brown one ;) ;) ;D  Should be a Borg Warner T10, with the Hurst shifter.  Welcome to the site :)
79 Heritage Brown, 400 4spd, #'s matching. 1 of 2917.

Welcome to 78TA.com! :) :)

I just bought the vehicle and it has a 4speed with a handle that has HURST written on it and by the side of the stick.

I bet it looks like this:

Unless somebody's changed it, the transmission willl be a BW ST10.  But 30 years is a long time so it's possible anything might be in there.  You'll need to get under there and look.

ok guys  78/79 only used the Borg warner t-10 4 speeds, Hurst shifters were an option which a majority recieved, the knob on other hands I have seen all sorts of arrangements from black ball, white ball, Pontiac style. as for the numbers

1979 model year according to my information:
     1590   301 T/A
     2485   400 T/A
     1530    301 T/A w/T-top
     2917    400 T/A w/T-top
      213     301 T/A SE w/T-top
     1107    400 T/A SE w/T-top
     1817     400 T/ATA

So accordingto this you have 1 of 1590 out of a total of 211,453 Firebirds

Borg Warner T10, with the Hurst shifter. Gotta love to see another 79 with a 4 speed out there. Welcome to the forum and post more pics of that car.
