301 Turbo Problem
« on: August 31, 2009, 12:22:05 PM »
I have a 1981 301 turbo trans am. But the problem is when I accelerate down the road the more I accelerate the more the car gives out a heavy thick white smoke. Any ideas of what the problem is? Also the smoke coming out smells more like antifreeze

Sounds like the Turbo needs to be rebuilt.

Antifreeze has a slight sweet smell, that might be a head gasket.

From what we've seen with the 301T is over the years, the wastegate
actuator eventually ruptures it's diaphragm, rendering it useless.

And... that would allow unchecked boost levels - if the turbo still has
it's punch. We've seen that often 15psi pops the head gaskets... but that's
a average. I've heard 12 psi doing it and as high as 17psi without.

You need a compression/leak down check to start with...
