Title: Flap on the shaker

I have a 78 t/a with a 400 in it. I was wondering if the shaker on those were supposed to be solid(no flap) or if it was supposed to have a flap that opened when you hit the gas pedal? I have had people tell me both ways are correct. Also would it help to open up giving it more air?

In 78 the flap did not open.  There are however kits that you can use to convert your non-functional scoop into one that opens based on either vacuum pressure or via electrial methods tied into the gas pedal.

These are kits to open up your shaker. You have two options: Have it always open (when the car is running), or purchase a kickdown solenoid that opens up the flap when you really jam on the throttle.

i originally cut mine out but everything you could imagine ended up in there, so i bought the kit the others mentioned and i love it. theres nothin like smashin the gas a watchin it open, i was also probably the easiest thing i've ever done to my car

There were functioning shaker scoops that had a opening flap, but they stopped about 1972.  After that, it was a solid scoop.
