78 Formula Snowflakes
« on: August 01, 2008, 02:13:48 PM »
I was checkin out my buildsheet and found out that my car came with snowflake wheels on it. What color, size and where can I get these? What do I need to get also in addition to the wheels, as far as lugs, center caps?

In fact I'm not even sure if I want to get snowflakes, I was also looking at Cragar SS Originals too, which are pretty sweet... What size would be best?

They would likely be 15x7 unless you have WS6 (then 15x8)...your buildsheet should tell you size and color.

Hitman sells the caps and lug nuts...you might post a "wanted" ad here and watch eBay for the rims if you decide to get them.

I'll scan the buildsheet asap and that should help us decipher it.

WS6 was not available on the Formula in 1978.  So he had the 15X7 snowflakes.  I've never seen any color but gold for the 78 WS6 wheels.  Doesn't mean they didn't make any other colors though.

Attribute it to John Witzke's fine paper on the W72 cars.

I did notice Brett's got it wrong his WS6 information.  He continues the myth that the 15X8 wheels have something to do with special edition cars.  No so.  All WS6 cars came with the 15X8 wheels....all non WS6 cars came with 15X7.  Special Edition cars came with either depending on whether or not they got the WS6 feature.

Where do I state that??  I know that the snowflakes 15x7 or 15x8 were not just for Special Edition cars.... does it say that on my website??

I think the last two pictures on WS6 say that.  I could be mistaken though.

Actually, it's under wheels and rims.  Look at the notation for the Gold SE.

I had them on my first TA when I was in high school. The paint on them was grey.

Could be....you're talking about the one year type 1978 wheels, aren't you?

Yes.........they had grey inserts in them instead of gold. I remember it because, oddly enough, my first car, a 1978 Monte Carlo, had EXACTLY the same 15x8 honeycombs on it when I bought it(now I KNOW THOSE weren't stock ;) ). They both had grey on the inside of the honeycomb........And they were painted, enamaled, or whatever.........the finish in the honeycomb was glossy, like an epoxy paint. But I KNOW they were (on both cars) 15x8 because those are the rims everybody wanted. Nobdy at the time wanted the 15x7's as you could put wider tires on 15x8's and everybody and their dog tried to buy them from me (and I caught one guy trying to steal them one night off the Monte)

I think you are misreading what I am saying there.  I am not stating at all that the 15x8 Snowflakes only came on Special Edition cars.  I admit that a word may be missing from it and it could be more clear, but I am NOT staing that the 15x8 snowflakes came only on Special Edition cars.  It states now:

Gold "Special Edition" WS6 15x8 inch Snowflake early 1978

These wheels came on Gold Special Edition cars in 1978 as seen below

Or even some Black Special Edition cars early in 1978

I will change it to this:
Gold "Special Edition" WS6 15x8 inch Snowflake early 1978

These wheels came on Gold Special Edition WS6 Equipped cars in 1978 as seen below

Or even some Black Non-Special Edition cars early in 1978

So again, I was not stating that the 15x8 snowflakes only came on Special Edition cars and I am sorry if you took it that way.  Actually that page is alos getting re-written in the webpage redesign, so I will make version two better and easier to understand.

I guess I interpreted incorrectly.  The rewrite does make it clear.

This would have been my car new, but I like the looks of my WS6 wheels now that Brett got a hold of them.

If you can read your buildsheet then it should say the snowflake color of gold or argent. My Formula came with gold snowflakes as it also had the gold W50 color option but assume the argent color would be standard on other Formulas.
