Solar78's Y81 Resto...
« on: January 09, 2007, 05:13:18 PM »
So as most of you know (since I am incapable of making a move regarding my car with out consulting 78TA/TAC members... ) that I have sent my car off to Brett for a Paint/Resto. So Brett took a quick look at it and... OUCH! The unexpected always happens.. I buy a Y81 so I don't have roof/TTop issues.. HA! NOT SO LUCKY!
WHO BONDOS A ROOF??   :x   I have a spot that he said looks like someone sat on the roof and rather than bend it back out.. they just laid bondo on it! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAN WHO DOES THAT!    haha

So here are some of the pics of the BEAST'S ISSUES...

Promised to keep you guys abreast of the progress...

At least today's bondo is much better than in the past.  Once Brett pulls out the dent and smooths it out with a little bondo...you're good to go!

But Hmmmmm, he could cut that out and install a T-Top!

Or, you could do like a friend of mine did in the 60's.  He had a white Volkswagon, and hey, the weather was getting warmer, so why not cut the top off and make a convertible?  That's exactly what he did.  It was fine while the weather was good, but along came November and the California rain.  No problem, he made a roof out of plywood.  He only kept the car through one winter....so I guess the roof leaked a little.

I am sure that is the first of MANY problems I will encounter.. if I cut off every part that has an issue I will be left sitting in my office chair holding the sterring wheel.. WITH NO HORN BUTTON BECUASE THATS WRONG TOO! hahahahaha

Man some of that stuff looks about a 1/2 inch thick!

Usually when you see those big gigantic cracks like that, you know there's a serious Bondo nightmare going on.

HAHA good on Larry... good one!

So what do you guys think about wheels? And by this I mean.. 15x8's vs. 15x7's... my car should have the 7's but I like the 8's.. I was going to get a set restored by Brett... should I put the 7's back on get those restored or stick with the 8's and get those restored? I always leaned toward Rally II's actually but I have to keep snowflakes on the car... so whats the concensus? 7's or 8's?

7" are correct, but the 8" versions look so much better.  That's what I'm going with... unless somebody creates a 17x8" version  of them in the next few months!!!!!!
