Title: What the #$% is NOS

 I see this term used all the time and it's not a term we use here, can someone explain what this term means  ???

I get the impression it represents aftermarket parts of one brand or another, is this correct ??  ::)

SO out of date stock for older model's but its new on the shelf, right !!  ::) makes sense.

We call that "clearance stock" here.
Once its 15 years old, its automaticly clearance stock, or it used to be when I was in the game, that may have changed, with throw away cars its likely 12 months now lol  ;D

For us,
It means Pontiac parts with a part number right out of the parts book.
However, after being discontinued by Pontiac, private people or businesses may have them still.
So, NOS, and yes, New Old Stock.
Once discontinued, prices tend to raise, as people still need these parts.
Also, NOS can mean nitous oxide added to the engine for more power. ;D
My 1981 Turbo Trans Am uses both. ;D :o ::)

I knew about the gas NOS, we have a Harley here with a little bottle of that strapped on the side, hehehe  ;D  ;D

Here is another post thtA i DID A WHILE AGO THAT KINDA TALKED ABOUT THIS:

Well, there are two things to consider here.  There is "NOS" and there is "GM Original" and there is "Aftermarket"..... Menaing that there are three different levels of parts.  First, there is "NOS" or "New Old Stock".  Basically, those are parts out there that were made back in the year your car was new.  The second is "GM Original" meaning that even though they were not made when your car was, they are still being produced by GM just like they were back when your car was made.  The third is "Aftermarket" which means that a company other than GM is making the parts.  So, when looking at parts for sale, of course NOS is the most expensive and sometimes the best to buy, but not always.  For example, you would not want a brand new set of NOS hoses for your car because they are probably dry-rotted after this long of a period of time.  The next best thing is to have the GM Originals, which are the parts that are still being produced by GM.  Then of course for the budget minded people, the aftermarket is the way to go.  Now, some parts out there that are aftermarket are still good peices to buy.  For example, the aftermarket nose emblems are just like the original except they do not have the GM part number on the back.  So, once it is installed, you will never know the difference.  But there are some aftermarket parts out there that are a terrible aftermarket reproduction and don't look anything like the original part that it was intended to reproduce..... like the center console for example.
