81 trans am ECM
« on: July 20, 2014, 11:24:00 PM »

Hey guys, I'm resto modding an 81 TA and planning on putting a 400 stroker in. Am I going to run into issues with the ECM? I'm assuming I will just have some extra connectors hanging there? Thanks ahead

No issues, just remove the harness that comes from the ecu as well. You'll just have an extra hole in the firewall

Save the ECU's (2) and the harness. Guys with turbo cars will buy it for spare or parts.  DOnt cut it. it comes out as a whole.

I could not find a body plug with the factory diameter hole for the ecm wiring. I think it is 2-1/16". I found a plug what was 2-1/8", so i got a 1x4" of pine, clamped it over the hole and used a 2-1/8" hole saw bimetal to oversize the hole for the plug. The wood is needed so your hole is perfectly cut into the sheet metal behind it.

I've since drilled smaller hole into my plug to run aftermarket gauge lines through. Will find a pic when I get a moment.

Pic here: http://www.modsandrods.tv/2013/04/04/project-trans-am-for-march-2013-insulation-completed-focusing-on-the-interior-and-wiring/

Glad I looked, that hole is 2-3/16". I actually used a 2-1/2" hole saw and plug.
