1978 Firebird Drag Car
« on: May 22, 2009, 10:54:22 AM »

Who else has seen this car at a local dag strip or just anywhere. I have seen it a few times at the local tracks around me. The car is sweet, I want to build a drag car actually like it but different color and wheels. Tell me what you think about this car.

Yeah ... I'm thinking he can probably turn a high 12, low 13 with that setup.

This car is running a low 5 to high 4 in the 1/8. It is one of the fastest cars out at the track.

so its more of a 9-10 second car. most of us go off a 1/4 still good but alot of money is into that monster. i'd too like to build one some day.

I'd say mid to low 8's in the 1/4.  You need a chute if you run faster than 150mph.

Yeah the car is really quick there is a 1980 Corvette that usually races him. The vette gets stomped most of the time but it keeps up with this car. I dnot know the size of the motor in the firebird but the vette has a 780 ci motor backed by a Lenco trans. I am putting a 750 hp 455 in the drag car when I start to build one. I think I am gonna run some spray on it probably a 300 shot.

wow. thats pretty inteste. i wish i had the money to build a drag car. i would love to have one.  now correct me if im wrong but i was told you could actually get more HP out of a 400 block and it would be more reliable.  how come you choose to go with the 455? i mean correct me if im wrong. i always wanted a 455 becasue i thought you were able to get more power out of them till i read that

Yes you are correct the 400 block was a stronger block and could stand more abuse, 400 were good if you build them right, like you can have a 400 block machined to have 455 crank in it. The only reason I went with a 455 was that my dad knows a guy that built one about 10 years ago for a 77 firebird, well long story short he wrecked the car before the motor was dropped in it and has a 750 hp racing motor in his basement. I talked to him and he told me if I wanted it bring him 500 dollars yes 500, and the motor would be mine then all I would need to do is build a transmission and get a rearend and gears that would handle the hp. I don't have much money to build the car with just run into good deals and wait and wait til I find the right things. But I am slightly building a 400 for my 78 T/A that were putting together.
