I was searching for the 1978 emissions label for someone else on here. And I found that Eagle Classic has two versions. One for a '78 RN and one for a '78 RY. I need to show my ignorance by saying that I don't know the difference. Can anyone shed light?

RY is for the automatic transmission, and RN is for the manual 4-speed.

RN is for the 400 MT, low altitude
RU is for the 400 AT, low altitude.
Is RY for the 400 AT, california emissions?
If so, what would be the R code for the 400 MT, california emissions?
Just curious.

There was no 400 with California emissions. You've got to look at the timing. There were two decals for the 400 automatic, one with the W72 upgrade (timing at 18 degrees) and one for the standard 400 (timing 16 degrees). It's explained here:

If you know the one you want, try the Pontiac dealer...they may have it.
Edit:
I got to thinking about my above response and I may have misspoke. There are at least two emissions stickers as stated above, but there could be another one for single exhaust and if there was a high altitude model there could be another. So, there are at least two, maybe more.

The emissions decal on my Y88, 4 spd, is RW with timing set at 18 degrees.
