Any AMC fans
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:52:11 PM »
was searching for pics of T/A's and came across something interesting.
1977

1979

197? and in original paint Playmate Pink

Seems everyone back in the day was trying to follow Pontiac somehow , someway. Though the AMX had been around for a long time ( about the same as the Firebird) it seemed to take on simular appearence packages as our T/As. Even in the Trans Am racing circuit.
I recall my father owning a AMC vehicle. it was only 1 year old when he bought it and after his ownership of 1 year the body started to rot. the year 1976. I rarely see any AMC cars in the numberous car shows I attend, was this a common issue with AMC ( body cancer).

Ah -- the Mustang II.  A horrid little car if there ever was one.  Now that I say that somebody will probably pipe up and say one of those was their first car and they think it was great, but lemme tell you in 1974 they were considered just ugly and slow.

That is the exact vehicle that was supposed to be used in Smokey and the Bandit, But they thought it better that the car actually went as fast as it looked.  ;D

Virgil--

My dad was not a car guy (his passion was fishing), but he owned AMCs a good portion of his life.  In 1969 when I was still quite young ;), he decided it was time for a new car.  I was getting hand-me-down Hot Rod magazines from my best firend's dad and, like Ralphie in "Christmas Story", I was leaving them open and scattered around the house with the pages turned to ads for GTOs, 442s, Stage 1 Buicks and yes, the new Trans Am.  He bought an Ambassador SST wagon with the vinyl wood grain siding. ::)

So much for the power of subliminal suggestion.

Mustang II was the same chassis as the Pinto. A very sad excuse for a car. However I do recall seeing a multitude of these cars from 74 to 77. The peak of the 70's fuel crisis. Another one you do not see on the highways anymore ( thank goodness).  I recall my neighbor had bought 3 of these cars in 1982 for 250.00 and took the 3 to make 1 running car.

Tinman,

My sincere condolences...now dont get me wrong some( very few) were not too bad, but OMG the Ambassador, Matador, Pacer. I think the only reason they actually built a car back then was to have a place to put the surplus engines for the Jeep CJ5, and Honcho.

My wife thinks the stylistic model for the Matador was a squished turd.

Yeah, I think the two-door Matador from the mid-'70s had to be the worst waste of sheet metal out of Detroit--ever.  The sad thing is that somebody had to approve the design.  What were they thinking?  And as much as I try, I can't forget about the Gremlin, either. :P

On the flip side, I remember going to the dealership with my dad in downtown San Antonio to have the "Wagon Queen Family Truckster" serviced and being enthralled with the Javelins, AMXs, and yes, even a "Machine" or two.

AMC must have been two companies at odds with each other as it seemed to be hit or bad miss and not much in between.
