Operation TATA
« on: June 20, 2008, 06:31:09 AM »
Well this is my childhood dream car.  It all started a "few" years back when I was 11 years old.  My step father at the time worked at a small Pontiac dealer in Fostoria Ohio.  I would go in with him on Saturdays and help the owners son detail cars.  One Sat we went in and the new TATA was just being unloaded off the truck.  I was instantly in love and since then have wanted one.  I almost bought one years ago but the owner didn't have the title and now on my 40th B Day I was able to find one on eBay and get it purchased.  It has yet to be delived and better photos will be posted when she arrives.  Here is the start of the journey!!

Yes you all know the disease I have now.  It's called pre planning, car arriving, pre project disease.  It's where all those ideas on what you want to do run through your mind!  I have some questions I want some advice on.

This is a numbers matching car, so I want to keep it as "stock" as possible.  The goal is to increase the performance, have the ability to return it to 100% stock if needed, yet have it look completely stock.  Did that make sense?

1.  The Olds 403 I believe put out around 220 hp stock.  I would like to increase this some without getting too radical and once again, having the ability to return it pretty close to stock.  I am thinking a mild car, punching it out some, carb, intake, and such.  I don't want it all ratty sounding but want there to be something more than the anemic 220 hp.

2.  I am planning on better shocks, springs (I am sure it needs new ones anyway) a mild drop and bigger sway bars.

3.  This is where I am a bit torn.  I REALLY dislike the "turbo" wheels.  I plan to polish then, and put them into storage, once again in case I need them.  I am thinking the 15x8 WS6 snowflakes in dark grey and polished to match the dark grey accents.  I am also thinking 18" year one wheels.  This is going to be a tough decision.

I am guessing however that these "mods" would not give it the ability to be shown in a stock class but maybe I am wrong.  I really don't care much since I am building it for my enjoyment, however I definatly do not want to ruin a classic car.  Thanks!

I know the feeling.  My '80 has been a six year project so far.  Slow and steady.

Tenth Anniversary Project

I am trying to decide something and need some advice.

I plan to drive my TA quite a bit after I get it rebuilt.  I am trying to deiced if I should replace the original motor.  I would then rebuild the original and store it in case I needed it for sale purposes.  This way I keep the miles off and don't risk hurting it.  I can then mod the replacement engine.  Thoughts?

FWIW, numbers matching cars are worth more than non-numbers matching cars.  It's only original when the original stuff is still around to be in it.  My car is pretty "stock" -- no real interior mods, no real exterior mods -- but it's not "numbers matching" because the factory 400 block blew up.  I had simply twisted its tail one time too many and a part failed.  If you don't worry about what it's going to be worth when you sell it, then just drive it and don't think about it.  If, on the other hand, you are concerned enough with future value enough that you're willing to pop for another engine AND keep the one you have stored properly -- then by all means get another engine built the way you want it and swap them.  In the end it boils down to those two choices. ;)
