Tire technology sucked back then.
Remember - Our cars (T/A's) are heavy @ 3500+ Lbs in stock form, and not terribly stable above 100+ MPH on bumps.
OK - actuallly it was a GM corporate thing back then.

I also think it was the new guys at GM.... They could not count over 100. They ran out of fingers and toes between them all.
