Cleaning for paint
« on: March 20, 2008, 11:06:26 AM »
What is the best way to clean all that gunk and crap and layer of rubberized undercoating off of my engin bay and firewall to prep for paint.  I have no sand blaster but have things like a die grinder angle grinder w wire wheel power washer?  Any suggestions would be great.

Engine degraisser (Foam) then pressure washer, this usually do a good job, this will take out most of it. Repeat
A good paint brush will help too get in little area.

Never thought about a paint scraper.  Should bust a few knuckles doing that!

I'd spray it down with a degreasing agent and let it soak, then pressure wash it as much as possible.  Some follow up with scrapers and scrub pads will be required but if you can get most of off before you get to those it will save you a lot of labor.

Ah yes, the elusive standard for "clean" water.  That's spreading across the country these days more and more... ::) ::) :-\

At the shop we use a product called Tarminator. It is by Stoner products. I did my TATA and it took all of the undercoating off without scraping, and didnt hurt the paint.

Hm.  If it is safe for clear coat how well can it remove old grease and undercoating?

Any one else use this stuff?

I have used it as well and it is safe for the paint.  I have also used gasoline or kerosene with the same outcome.

Here my little Civic Supercharged that I clean up one week end coupe year ago

When I got her, it was a big mess, foam degraiser + pressure washer did a perfect job.
Little paint help too, but here a little before & after

I found the wire wheel on the angle grinder worked best.
