"Pro Plasma" -- cure to flat tappet oil problems?
« on: October 20, 2008, 10:36:55 AM »
Does anybody have any experience with Comp Cams "Pro Plasma" nitriding process, which is supposed to be the answer to the zinc reduction problem in motor oil?

According to the ad I'm looking at, it is a patented 36  hour nitriding process that uses pulsed nitrogen plasma in a vacuum controlled environment to embed chains of nitrogen ions into the camshaft surface approximately .008" - .010" deep.  This is supposed to strengthen the surface by 100%, and provide a permanent solution to the problem of EPA mandated reductions of anti-wear substances in the oil.

Sounds good to me -- anybody know any more about it?

Its the same process we use where I work to harden the gear sets we assemble for GM cadillac and vettes. just we do it on a larger scale. It makes for less wear on the gear teeth because of the hardened surface.I would say it is a good thing for any metal to metal contact high rotation/friction area.

Does that mean that the bottom of the lifters must be treated the same way (to same hardness)?

Here's a link that explains the process.  And the article mentions that the lifters are nitrided at the same time as the cam.

If it wouldn't cure problems over the long term, it would definitely help during break-in when it the most critical.
