Topic: (painted) hood bird stencil???

Hey gang, we are looking into the idea of painting the hood bird (and possibly the sail panel birds), on our 78 trans am. We do not want a custom bird, only interested in the factory look of the bird. The car will be black with gold stripes. The bird will go under the clear coat.
We cannot find a template anywhere yet.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I remember when these cars were roaming my neighborhood back when they came out that some people airbrushed the birds on their cars. Some were custom and some were exact copies.  I think that if you found a professional airbrush artist they would be able to do it exactly like the decal, template or not. This is probably the method I'm going to use if i ever get to that stage of the game.

Creating a stencil should not be that difficult to have done. I have a vinyl cutting machine and program at work that I have used to cut small versions of the bird to test out paint colors and plan on using to paint my bird also. Find a good quality pic of a bird you want and take it to a sign shop and see what they say, they may be able to make a stencil for painting out of vinyl.

Great ideas. I have the bird image saved on my computer as a dxf and eps file. Hopefully a sign shop will be able to use it .

I will be painting my hood bird as well. An eps file should work fine, you can also download vector format birds on brandsoftheworld.com. Keep in mind if you have a sign shop cut it for you you will want them to use a masking type vinyl like Gerber mask. It is tacky enough to stick but still removes easily unlike regular vinyl.

This is awesome, gives me hope I may still be able to paint my TA black with silver rather than gold birds and type.
