Found a guy in Hendersonville NC and that is the price he quoted Frank last night including core charge.  Of course we have to pick it up.

Does that sound like a good price for a rebuilt tranny, (includes torque converter)?

Oppps, move this to drive train section please!  sorry

Paid $800 to have mine rebuilt with shift kit and new torque converter so its not out of line.

What kind of rebuild is this? Stock? Or some performance upgrades to handle future engine plans?

It depends on whether or not you want your car to be numbers matching.  What you're getting is some other transmission rebuilt and you give them yours.

$800 is probably about right.  It depends on the area and what labor rates are.  Personally, I would want my transmission rebuilt rather than exchange it.  Here in Silicon Valley that job would cost about $1,200.  But the guy I use knows what he's doing.  He installs a shift kit and changes the u-joints.  He does a complete rebuild.  But everything is more expensive here.

I can't imagine anyone havning that job done for $300.  Parts alone would be close to that.  In fact I looked up a rebuild I had done in 2000, the parts alone were $500.  That price includes a new torque convertor, flex plate, bushings, bearings, modulator, filter, fluid, mounts, and overhaul kit.  The labor was a tad over $400.  The entire bill came to just under $1,000.  On this rebuild, I didn't need u-joints and he didn't install a shift kit.  My daughter's rebuild a couple years ago was a little more expensive.

But like I said....this area is very, very expensive.  Labor runs around $125 an hour.

This is a little different, but I had my 4spd Borg Warner rebuilt early last year for right at $900.

Well, I believe it is for a different tranny, but we want to keep the orginal tranny, matching numbers of course.  Waiting for a call back from the guy to confirm his price to just rebuild ours.

I don't think I want to add anything special to it, just keep it like it was, stock.

There are several levels of "numbers matching". Some will say a car is "numbers matching" if it just has the original engine. Others will say it is ONLY numbers matching if EVERY numbered part on the car is the correct number. Engine block, heads, carb, distributor, trans, rear end etc etc.

If you haven't checked the number on your transmission, it may have already been replaced at some point in the past. In which case, it wouldn't matter if you just got the rebuilt tranny for $600. If you know your engine and trans are correct (number matching), then you would probably want to have your original trans rebuilt.

Numbers matching, to me anyway, means you have the items that list the vin stamped on them.  A carb doesn't have the vin so it's not considered.  It may mean something different to other people.  Basically, it's the engine, transmission and the body.  I don't think the rear end has the vin stamped on it....but I could be wrong.

I would tend to agree with your definition Russ. I draw the line at the drive train meaning the engine and trans being stamped with the last 6 of the VIN. I was just providing the extremes of the definition of "numbers matching" that I've heard.

I don't know of a car with the VIN stamped on the rear end either but there is a code stamped on the axle tube that should match the code on the build sheet.

Besides the drive train numbers, those that go to the furthest extreme do consider the "correct" part numbers for all parts including the correct part numbered carb and correctly coded rear end etc as requirements for a "numbers matching" car. This is usually the Corvette crowd.

Update,
Found out the engine is matching, but Frank cannot locate any stamp or tag on the tranny.
We know for a fact that the rear end gears have been changed.  65mph, rpms @ 3
(I think).
We are going to take our tranny out and send it off to that shop in Hendersonville- Jackson's Performance Transmissions.
Same price $625.00

I agree....I made sure I have numbers correct parts on my four speed.  I even bought a spare numbers correct carb that Cliff is rebuilding.

Heidi, I think the service manual illustrates where the vin number appears on the transmission.
