Electrical probs need help
« on: January 31, 2008, 06:24:56 PM »
Ok my brake light is always on.  The brakes have been redone and are all new.  How do I get the light off.  My choke light is on and makes a buzzing sound?  When I turn my headlights on I get a buzzing sound unless I dim the dash all the way.  My dome light does not work but I think there is a wire cut on the dome light under the dash and I can fix that.  This is all on a 81 Trans Am.  Any help would be nice.

The brake light in the dash cluster?  If so, check the switch by the ebrake or the switch at the master cylinder.

On the dome light, the light doesn't come on when you open the door?  If it doesn't, you do probably have a bad wire for the hot lead.

I'll pass on the choke light.....

Try grounding that headlight switch with a temporary jumper to see if the buzzing stops.

 Choke light...

Is the light on all the time, key on or off?

What's the voltmeter say? engine running? off?

The choke light plays double duty in also
revealing a charging system malfunction. There's
also a relay for the choke heater in that circuit.

And like ta78w72 says... grounds, very very important.

Can we get a little history here...

how long you had it?  had you been doing any work on it,
like say a radio installation?

had a previous owner hacked up any wiring?

prevous owner has every thing hacked up.  There is an aftermarket radio in there.  No the light is only on when the car is running.  Have not got my multimeeter out yet to look into it.

Brake light........... check to make sure the e-bake is completely disengaged, also check to make sure everything is cool with the connection down at the foot brake mechanism itself.

On the ebrake mechanism there is a single light brown wire running down to a switch. What happens to the brake light when you disconnect this wire? Does the light continue to stay on?

Hi, Don't know the 80's schematic for the choke light, so not much help, but I will say this...Many hacks install aftermarket radio's, and get the gray illumination wire for the original radio crossed with the red or black for the radio, causing backfeed into the instrument panel.  Drop radio wires and verify, or check gray one is not hooked to anything.

Here's what the switch for the brake light looks like and it's
mounting.
