The photo showing the ground wire is actually the ground for the power door lock.  The ground for the power windows is through the motor to the door as Rick said.  You can correct your problem by installing four new relay's and also by running a ground wire from the window motor fastener through the boot to a suitable place under the dash.  I have a write up which describes what to do and how to wire the relays.  By the way, those relays above are way too expensive.  There are much cheaper ones here:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=330-070

However, these relays are not intended to replace the one original relay for the power windows located on the right side of the steering column.

The new four relay add on system takes the load off the switch.  Note that you can also buy the connectors with a few inches of wire which can be spliced into the new circuit.

At this point, you should also replace your switch.

PM me with your email address if you want the information.

Project Complete.  I saw the cheaper relays and decided for me the extra to have a complete circuit board was worth the extra few beans.  No more smoke, and the windows are the fastest I've ever seen going up and down.  That's right, your not dreaming.....I have an automatic and the control board fits right between the center console insert and the tranny shift housing.  As a matter of fact, you can see the ground I attached to the frame.  I am working on the complete write up along with pictures (I would do one thing, then take a picture, then do another...).  I think it took me twice as long, especially when I forgot to take a picture of one of the steps and had to go undo it take a picture, then do it again

I still need to convert my manual windows to power.  That's a great idea having the relay's somewhere under the console.  Since I have a manual transmission, I have more room under the console.  Great idea and I'm not too proud to steal it!  As for the relays, I already have the cheap ones that I can attach to a board myself, but the relays pre-attached to the board makes it convenient.

Nice, very clean install.

I'm looking forward to the write up as well. My '77 needs some "assist" in bringing the windows up (aka pulling them up by hand while holding the switch).

Ouch.  I bet that's awkward on the passenger side if you're driving alone. :-\

Since I don't have it on the road yet it isn't a big deal. I just leave the key on and hop in the passenger seat and hit the switch and assist that one up. They do roll up themselves, but they're sloooooow, so I help them.  :D Even so though they're generally in one position (whether it be up or down) for awhile so I don't have to do it very often.

Geez, send me your email address and I'll send you the excel worksheet of the wiring diagram that I came up with.  It's crude but shows everything.
