What is this wire for?

I was working on my gauges, painting and repairing them, I have this wire that comes off the back of the speedo, I was wondering what its for?
Can it be eliminated?

I finally found it on a wiring diagram, it's a speed sensor for cruise control, what's it doing on my bird, one only knows?
