L78 = Pontiac 400 base engine (no W72 package)
L80 = Oldsmobile 403 engine
Y82 = Black and Gold Special Edition with Hurst T-Tops (In '76 it was used for all S/Es whether they had T-Tops or not) '76 through mid year '78
Y84 = Black and Gold Special Edition with Fisher T-Tops Mid year '78 through
Y88 = Gold Special Edition

Just from memory ...
L78 - 400 motor but not the W72
L80 - 403 motor
Y82 - SE Trans Am ('77/'78)
Y84 - SE Trans Am ('79)
Y88 - Gold SE Trans Am - 78 only

Dig into the sight - there's better/more complete info around.

Also have to remember that both codes L78 and W72 will show on the buildsheet for a W72 400 car.
