Good Investment or not?
« on: September 03, 2008, 02:00:13 PM »
BOYZ...I need to ask this question and get your thouights on this one...?

I have a 1989 GTA clean Florida car that with only 37000 miles on it.

First question from an investment point of view do you think these 3rd gens will become popular like the 2nd gen cars? I am thinking that because these are small type engines and not big blocks these cars have nowhere to go up in value.

I have always thought of buying a 79 SE four speed but when I saw this car I jumped on it.

I waited to long and now I have priced myself out of what a nice SE sells for....

I am hoping that having a 89 it will go up in value and i will be able to buy a 79 SE y84.

Is buying one of these cars a good investment?

How many GTA's did they make 5000 or so? with the 5.7 engine? t-top... I know the anniversary they only made 1555.

How do attach pictures on here?

Well I think that after a while the late 80 GTA's will go up in value, but unfortunately as they go up the 2nd gens are going to continue to go up so I don't think it will ever get to the point that you will be able to sell your car and go out and get a 79 SE.    I think many 2nd gens are a good investment including the SE's but its anyones guess as to how long it would take it to get to the value you are looking for.  Many of us have cars that have a lot of appraised value but if you never plan on selling then its really not worth anything. Most people post photos in a photobucket or similar type account and then link to them here.

I'll tell you this....

I hated the 3rd gen birds as a young adult during the 80s because as a child of the 70s I thought Pontiac was shafted with a bow tie motor between it's fenders.  Fast forward to now at the tender age of 46  ;D and the 3rd gen has really grown on me and I in fact want one in my driveway.  Go figure.

Soooo, who knows.  Horespower went up as the 3rd gen was developed, but there are serious build quality issues to contend with.

If you are going to get one, you are looking at one of the most popular.  '89 GTA with 5.7 and T-tops.  The only other one probably slightly more popular is the 5.0 with 5 speed for a variety of reasons.  You can check out the aficionados at the following website

Good luck buying a 79 SE four speed - I looked on & off for years before finally pulling the trigger.  The search became a sickness, I had to do it when I found one.

If I were buying an 89 GTA, it'd be the 20th Anniversary Indianapolis Pace Car optioned 3.8-liter V6 Turbo.  That was the Grand National motor - yes you're correct, 1555 made.

Let alone finding a black on black Y84 W72 norwood car. But my brother has a 88 GTA 5.0 TPI and likes it better than my 79 Y84 W72. So maybe it depends on the person but over all market i don't think a base GTA will ever be over 30K on average where as 79 SE W72 will probley coast to around 60k+ Just my 2 cent.

Mine's an L code - California car with a virgin underside - looks new.  How many SE's can be left?

The TA's aren't a Z06 with 505 HP though - they're just a cool classic that gets looks.  As far as $60K ... not in this economy.  Maybe in 20 years because it'll take 5 years to pull out of the Real Estate//Banking mess we're in now.

60K? A bit optimistic, I fear.

40-45K, maybe. For an extremely nice example.

At least the ones I am looking at.
