My 455 had the 51 heads on it. The guy who did my rebuild said they are good if you plan on running a blower. They have large chambers 121cc I think. I went with 6x-8 heads.

Don't know much about the 17's.

17s are 350 heads, "small valve".

What are you building?  If a "blown" 455, the 51s are okay AFTER they've had screw-in studs installed, and significant port work. Anything else, and they're  a "doorstop".

The 17s would be suited to a high compression, low-speed build.

Neither of these heads are very good for overall performance .

I have a set of 6H heads but they are probably not much better then the ones you have. They were on the 455 when I got it.

What engine combo are you aiming at? 400? 455? Other?

455 is the block i have its a 74 block or maybe a 75 (year 74 on the back by distributor) came with the #51 heads. I want the thing to be a beast but a reliable one. i am not sure if im going with a turbo 350, 400 200r4 or a 4 or 5 speed set up yet.

Sounds like the 455 I got. 74 with the 51 heads. My engine guy set me up with a set of 6x-8 heads for around 9.2:1 comp. and a XE262 Comp cam. I was told I should have gone with the XE268, but when I told the engine guy I wanted more of a cruiser then a racer he told me to stick with the 262 cam. He also said the the 262 cam will work better with Air Condition then the 268 (don't ask me Y), and the stock 4 speed.
Left the stock intake in, and still working on getting a carb. for it, so I can't tell you if it's a beast yet. Also got some RARE stock headers with a Pypes exhuast.

That is almost my set up except I have the XE268H cam and 6X4 heads.

Probably be a good idea. The 6h's have a huge chamber like the 51's. Unless............you want to turbo it or put a blower on it then they are good.
