I am working on my 79 400 4 speed tach right now and troubling shooting. My wires for tach are pink and white (2 wires) that are plugged into tach on cluster. Now it is not working either so maybe something is wrong but that's what I got as of now. I have power in the white wire and think it should be power to pink?

White is ok they changed at some point, white is coming from your distributor, pink is your 12v ign lead it "boosts" your signal so your tach is correct

I think the brown wire is my distributer power because when I turn the key on it's hot.The smaller red/pink wire doesn't and it has a small black thing made onto it like a fuse or somthing,I think that might be my tach...I'm still trying to get my wiring fixed before I try and start it up.The tach wire get's it's power from the distributer is that right?

the pink/red wire with the inline fuse is your power source, the brown is your tach signal.... you should have a pink wire under the dash that plugs into the fuse panel to actually power or boost the signal coming out of the dash.

Well on my car I found this out,,the brown/tan wire is the power source and the tach is the red/pink wire with the inline fuse because I pluge'd it into the tach side of the distributer and it started working..It's all factory wiring and nothing was change.....That's the way it was with mine maybe some car's even the same year were not.....Thanks for all the help on this.........Tim.
