Title: 1978 Y88 hard top value
Post by: bodymodifier on July 07, 2016, 03:54:06 PM
Hello this is my first post on this site, I came into possession of a 1978 solar gold Trans-Am around a year ago i done have the time to restore it at the moment and i'm short on room paint and body are nice no rust missing the decals interior was changed before me to Camaro black mostly and the motor is a 403 but the car cowl tag calls out a 400 i do have a 1978 numbers  400 block and crank and intake for it was starting to gather the parts for a restoration on it.
I do have the PHS option sheet for this car it calls out Y88 i don't see a t-top option called out  i have gotten some flack locally that its not a y88 because of the lack of the t-tops maybe this is one of wondered about possible hard top 1978 S/E cars, what would you figure i should get for it is i sell it?

It very well be a Y88 car that had the roof swapped.  All Y88 cars had T-tops.  You say the car has a 403 but the VIN says it should be a 400.  Weird  people usually do the opposite swap, lol.  Post some pics of it if you can.  You have the PHS info saying the VIN # is a Y88 but that doesn't mean the car really is.  People swap VINS and Data plates and dupe unsuspecting people all the time.  Can you trace back the history of the car?

Two trans am sites have this to
Y88 : 1978

This was called "Gold Edition" and was only produced in 1978, it had Gold paint finish with brown stripes and Tan interior, they could have t tops or not and still labeled Y88

And this is from on this site.
Special Edition Trans Am which had the Y88 designation, but just like in 1976, it did not matter if the car had t-tops or not, they were all the same Y88 code.
So that to me would show  that there were y88s made without t tops

I think the Y88 only came in T-tops

One could possibly exist, but over the 30 years I've that I've studied them, I've never actually seen one. Been fortunate enough to own 2 of the T-Top ones though.
