Alright I have finally decided that I am going to go with a set of headers for my trans am. It got pushed back unfortunately because I have had a really bad past couple months but its time to get my life back in order. I think I want to go with a set of Hedman headers because price is a concern for me. My question is what part number do I get? I checked with summit and got 2 different answers so Im not sure now. I have a 78 with the 400 and an automatic trans. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The 28150 has the 1 3/4" primaries.  The 28140 has the 1 5/8" primaries.  Is that the dilemma?

You've D-port heads, right?

Get the 28140- the 1 5/8" primaries will give you nice low end torque. I have Hooker Comps (also 1 5/8" tubes) w/ 2 1/2" duals and my 'Bird has nice low end power, as well as good midrange and top end. I would go with the 1 3/4" primaries if I was running a 428 or 455.

Thanks, I think that was one of my issues. I don't know what shape it is.., how would I tell? Just pull the manifolds off? Thanks.

No - just tell us the number in the center of the heads (above the center exhaust ports).  I'm guessing 6X.

Look at the heads, particularly the center 2 exhaust ports.  D-port heads look like this:

Round-port heads look like this:

Yeah ... if they're the 7F6 heads, just give 'em to me and I'll send you a ported/polished set of 6X heads with a 3 angle valve job  ... and two tickets for a week long cruise.

Rick's got all the pix ...

So now that it is 3 months after I started this thread i am actually doing the install and of course, i just broke one the header bolts. I was as careful as possible but it still happened so now I have to pull the passenger head off. the question I have now is once I get the head off, how the hell do I get the broken bolt out?? also, I am having a really hard time getting to the center 2 bolts on the passenger side and the drivers side. All of the other bolts I got out but I have no clue how to get to these 4 bolts. I have both front wheels off but the A arm is in the way. Can anyone give me insight as to how to get to these?

Thanks,
I am guessing just the 5 piece set should work since it is a 9/16 bolt. I see you just drill into the broken bolt with the provided bits but how does it extract?

I think they've left handed threads - it grips it and you back it out.  Be patient with it ... you should get some instructions or just google it.

another case is you can pull the head and take it somewhere and they can remove that bolt for you too.

PB blast - it penetrates into the threads.  Then try the other bolts after it's soaked in ..
