The 70-72 shakers command major money, just watch what it will end at. It will end in the 4 digits. Oh, you should have have posted this in the ebay section, btw.

You guys have to remember,
The early Trans Am with functional hood scoops, were only made from 1970 to 1972.
A total of only 4589 made.
Now, the non-functional hood scoop, the same style, ran from 1973-1976.
A total of 89,035.
Wanna guess how many 403 Olds powered Trans Ams, or 400 Pontiac powered Trans Ams were made the other years?
You start to get an idea.
Look at finished cars (eith restored, or un-restored) and what they go for.
There is a reason why the parts are so much money compared by a latter year.
That one listed is a very beautiful scoop.

It never ceases to amaze me the money that certain parts command!
Power is nothing without Control.

73 - 74 T/As didn't have functional scoops?  I didn't realize that.

Nope.
1973-1976 hood scoops are a rivited (three of them) back plate.
Drill them out, instant ram air! ;D

Yeah, that feature was discontinued by Pontiac in 1973 to comply with EPA noise regulations.  Think of it as the cold fingers of death gripping and grasping to kill performance automobiles... :(

Yep, knew the 75/76 scoops were riveted, just thought 73/74 scoops were functional......never really had a chance to look at one.  I also thought the 74 GTO scoop was functional.....but again, never actually got to look at one.

It's hard to imagine that much noice coming from an open scoop.  Is there a lot of noise?  If the EPA made such a big deal, then how was Chevy able to make a functional cowl induction scoop for the 80/81 Z-28?

Sorry if this reads critical....not meant too.  ;)

The '74 GTO hood scoop is functional.
The early thirdgen had the off set hood buldge scoop function as well.
After the flat hood with vents came out in 1985, Pontiac dropped it again.
I never found out why they were able to bring them back out.
Maybe the revs of the early engines had something to do with it.

George, I think it had to do with muffler designs.  When the first EPA sound tests came out, the manufacturers went nuts trying to stifle everything.  Then they started reading the fine print of the test, which said that the car couldn't exceed so many dB of noise at a certain speed.  So...the design engineers went to work...got a system that met that as the car drove by just coasting...and they were able to bring back better intake systems and get more performance out of the exhaust systems.  In other words, they started designing to pass the test rather than to necessarily make the cars all that much quieter all the time. ;)

I dunno how the 74 GTO made it through with the functional shaker during that time, though... :-\

Rick,
It is funny how the smaller engines had the functional hood scoop.
The '74 GTO was a 350 engine, and the '82-'84 Trans Ams had the 305.
But not the 400, 403, or the 455.
Makes you wonder, huh?
