IIRC - Prior to 79, you could get a Pontiac 400 W72 or non-W72, and both were available in automatics or 4 speeds.  Starting in 1979, if you had a Pontiac 400 it had a 4 speed and was a W72.  The W72 was a slightly higher performing engine than the non- W72, 200 hp in 77 and 220 hp in 78.  I'm not sure about 79.

Check out the W72 document put together by John Witzke that's available on this website.

1999 Trans Am Anniversary Edition #953 (sold)
2000 Trans Am Firehawk #263

The only 4 speeds made in 79 where mated to the Pontiac 400 engine -- automatics got the Olds 403.

Rick, just to clarify, you could get a 301ci backed by an auto or four-speed manual in a 1979 T/A too.

Yep.  There's a collector by me that has a low-mileage yellow 301 4-speed '79 sitting next to his '70 hemi Superbird.

Are the 301 4 speeds worth anything? I know of a couple.....
