key pops out
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:59:34 PM »
So my key/ignition just comes out. It has always been this way since I have owned it. How do I get it to stay in there and also it doesn't go back two clicks. Just one.

The key should only go back 1 click. There is a small set screw inside the column, that holds the ignition in. You have to remove the hub and horn ring underneath .

Thanks. I'll go dig into it now that I know what to look for. I could have  sworn it turned back two clicks before. Either way I guess it was not supposed to huh?

So I need to take that huge nut out of the center of the steering hub?

That doesn't look like a 79 or later column.  The 78 and prior didn't have a set screw.

You'll need to pull the hub and lock plate to gain access to the key lock.  The turn signal switch will also need to be pulled away to get to it.

I've used my steering wheel puller and lock plate depressor many times over the past 30 years.  They're cheap and worth having in your tool box.....but then again I really like speciality tools.

I have a puller. I only used it once in the five years I have had it but it was worth having. Thanks again

Anyone know what I can do to keep the column locked while I try and pop this off?

No set screw that I see. Please can anyone help me out?  It's a 78 TA 4speed. I can not seem to figure out what holds the ignition in.
