Fuel filter arrow pointed "out"...?

1981 T/A with "H" (5.0 liter Chevy 305 small block) engine with an Electronic carb...

On the front of the carb, "FILTER" is stamped on the casing with an arrow (also stamped on the case) pointed out (toward the passenger side)...this is where the fuel supply line enters the carb...

I am sure there is a reason for this, but I can not figure out why...
