Title: noob... problems with carb..
Post by: weaz4200 on July 27, 2009, 11:52:33 PM
dont know where to get a dummies guide for figurin this out... but i need some help... im new to the car scene and i dont have much experience... but here the situation... my cuz has a 79 TA with a 301...rochester quad carb which i rebuilt (first time..first shot...feelin kinda proud).... the thing is all the vacuum lines werent hooked up right in the first place (in my opinion) or hangin not hooked up at all.... i have posted 2 links to the carb... was wonderin if someone can look at the 2 pics and tell me where each part of the carb should be hooked up to... ive taken the liberty of labelin each spot with a number.... so if someone can write the numbers and a description of where that needs to go id appreciate it...http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk212/robertweaz/specs/?action=view&current=001.jpg http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk212/robertweaz/specs/?action=view&current=002.jpg ... remember im a noob so elaborate with the description....thanks to anyone that can help...ROB

Not sure if the car in question is auto or manual and if it has A/C or not so here's a couple choices.

These are the emissions/vacuum diagrams from the '79 Service Manual.

auto...has ac....but not workin... i appreciate the quick response... im rackin my brain tryin to figure this out..... he has a manual (book) for it.... but to be honest... those diagrams dont help... at least not me... i dont understand them... thats why i labeled all the parts with numbers hoping that someone could specifically tell me at least where those should lead to... the thing about his carb... from what i understand is that its a 301 motor... but apparently its a rochester quadrajet from a 400... at least thats what the carb numbers tell me... is it possible based off my picture to say...for example... number 11 is the fuel inlet... n i goes to blah... or number 7/8/9  are blah and they go to this part of the car... get what im sayin... i wish that diagram was that easy.... n it probably is... but not to me... again...noob here... so please elaborate... id be very much obliged.

Weaz,

If you copy the IMG line from your photobucket account and then paste it here in your reply you'll get the following result :)

Automatic you say huh? Ok well here goes....

8 is hooked up correctly. Leave it be.
11 is your fuel line. If you didn't replace the fuel filter during your rebuild and you have no idea when it was done, now would be the time to replace it.
1 should have a weird shaped metal piece that screws in. Then a line runs from the screwed in piece to your brake booster.
2 should connect up to your vacuum line for the tranny.
3 ??
4 ??
5 should be a small black vacuum line that controls your HVAC (heat/ac) - runs through the firewall.
6 ??
7 this is your choke. Should be a screw in piece that's connected in your intake manifold.
10-14 - really not sure on.

This should give you enough of a start that you can correlate the rest with the diagram Jeff posted up. If you're not sure and want to get the car running, just cap off the unused ports.

1...got that on...why the brake booster... 2.... vacuum for tranny? what does it do?... n why cant 3 or 4 do the same thing... instead of 2? also.. if anyone wants to chime in and correct me... but i saw a diagram where 3 goes to some part of the dissy... 4 has somethin to do with ac... and 5 and 6 is carb secondary vacuum break thermal vacuum valve(connects to the part on the air cleaner... i think). someone told me that 7 is connected to a piece that has 2 nozzles that is on the manifold.... so one nozzle goes to 7... and the other (was told) to the EGR valve...sound right? 8... i figured that much... just need a new hose.. maybe the others might be canister purge/pcv valve/crab bowl vent? FYI.. i have no idea what those even mean... id like to hear feedback... thanks for the help...

2 - controls the shift points. If you don't have it hooked up you'll have to manually shift from 1-2 and 2-3. It makes things really interesting if you have a high powered motor and a shift kit installed in the tranny - trust me!

The reason it's on 2 is this....there's a hardline - 3/8" if memory serves - that comes up the firewall from the tranny and then has a U shaped bend in it that puts it right on top of number 2. Use a 1" piece of vacuum hose to connect it and you're golden. Sure number 3 or 4 could do the same but you'll need a longer piece of vacuum line to do it AND it won't be how the factory assembled the car.

you said that #5 should be a small black vacuum line that controls your HVAC (heat/ac) - runs through the firewall. but based on the 5th pic it shows that 5 goes to SVB-TVS (whatever that stands for) and the other one on the SVB-TVS to the secondary choke pull-off. shows 4 goin to something with the ac.. 3 to somethin with the distributor... also 9-14... minus 11.. that i know is the fuel inlet...  that leaves those 5 open.... and im assuming those will be  carb vacuum/ bowl vent/ fuel tank/ purge/ and EGR valve... so whats what?

Mine didn't have a TVS switch so I was going off how mine looked when I ran the Q-Jet.

It looks like you've posted several different vacuum diagrams - possibly for AT vs MT vs different engines. The one Jeff posted should be for the car with the specs provided. If your engine or tranny are different, then you just need to follow the corresponding diagram :)

the things that i also dont get are the labels like....SVB-TVS/DS-TVV/EFE n' EGR TVV...etc..etc.... like i said.. this is my first attempt at this and at understanding the diagrams... at least if maybe i knew what those labels mean that i previously mentioned i might be able to understand it a little better...

What you need to do is to set down and read the factory service manual.  The engine emissions system section has a description of all those parts and what the names mean.  Once you understand how the emissions control system is supposed to work, the names will begin to make sense to you.  It's really not that bad to read and understand it all, but it takes some time and concentration.
