What parts are rare and hard to find?
« on: June 25, 2007, 06:02:52 PM »
So, between here and the Bandit Club, I realize that some parts for our cars are just nearly impossible to come by. So, anyone care to list some of the rarest parts that I need to start watching for, or even trying to fix what I got?  my guess would be rubber seals for hurst hatches (which i will need) are a good place to start.
BTW Hitman, saw some of your ebay listings, I wish I could have you save me a 78 Y82 decal set, but it'll be a couple years until I need it.

Fresh air intake with brackets is hard to find.  The original radio bracket is also hard to find.  Clutch safety switch is near impossible.  Original map pocket (with silver trim). Console.  Dash.  And, I'm sure I've left off tons of stuff....Oh yeah, original center caps are getting hard too.

And, they don't make the rear window with the defogger grid anymore...at least that I've seen.  The black wire for the power trunk release.

Classic has them. Both 1st and 2nd.

I have a stupid question....Do you really want to put NOS rubber on? It's almost 30 years old. Rubber will deteriorate over time regardless if it's used. I wouldn't put on a 30 year old radiator hose.

I haven't taken delivery of my '78 yet, but I'm shopping for parts that it needs. I can't find the license plate lenses. I've searched Ames, Classic, and NPD. I see nobody has tail lights either.

78 didn't have a license plate lens.  The rear lights are available.  I've seen them at GM Sports Salvage, although I don't know what they would want for a set.  But all the parts for these cars are getting hard to come by....either they're expensive or scarce, but you can get just about anything you need given enough time and money.

I knew I'd ask a stupid question. So the license plate lens is built into the tail light assembly? I thought I saw screws holding on the lens the last time I was at the car.

It's not a stupid question.  I guess you could put a lens in if you wanted one.  But the plate is suppose to screw into the license plate holder.  No lens came from the factory.  The  license plate holder sits between the tail lights as Magnum said.

Yeah, it's between the tail lights, but the license plate lights are also in the inner ends of the tail lights. They are actually a separate piece though as mine are missing.

Confusion. I mean the clear lens that lights up the license plate. On the inside of the tail lights.

On a related note. I just saw a '78 TA at the salvage yard. Blu/Blu, no t-tops, 403. Got hit on the passenger front. They are having a 50% off sale on the 4th. What should I pull? I need the charcoal cannister, and wiper arm. Should I pull the spats (I think that's what they are called) and the rear bumper cover? What else?
