'79 Anniversary T/A advice
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:24:09 PM »
Hello
I wanted to get some advice from some of you that have restored or modified some T/A's. I want to take a Trans Am and through time basically build a similar car to the Burt Reynolds T/A or at least a cool pro-touring T/A. I found a 79 Anniversary for a good price. Once I start the project I don' t plan on getting rid of the car.
However I was wondering if taking a the Anniversary car and modifying it instead of restoring it to new condition was a bad idea? Or should I just get regular T/A and modify that?
Obviously it all comes down to what I want to do. However I thought I would get other T/A fan's opinion.
Thanks

It would be wiser to modify a base T/A instead as the TATA's are worth more in stock trim.

I'm going to take a closer look at it tomorrow. I've seen it and heard it, but didn't have the time to really look at it.
Any special tips or things to look at or for would be appreciated.
thanks

Get a base TA - the 10th anniversary are more rare.  If you jack with the 400/4speed, you'll wish you hadn't.

So what I seem to be getting from everyone and what Ive read is the 400 w/ 4spd is really rare and the 403 w/auto isn't really that rare.
The one that I'm looking at is the 403 w/ auto.

Both the 400/4spd (1,817 produced) and the 403/auto (5,683 produced) TATA are considered collectable models...the 400/4spd is typically desired a bit more when choosing between the two.

I'd say they're both fairly rare - there were ~116K Trans Ams made in 1979, about 8500 had the 400/4spd combo with, as Jeff says, 1817 having the silver anniverary package.  About 79K had the 403 without the SE/TATA package.

Well I'm on the hunt again!
Thanks guys.
I think his price is decent for the car. But I would have a hard time changing a collector car, and I'm not a huge fan of how the 10th anniversaries look.
I want to find some thing near me a 77-78 T/A that is drivable for now. with T-Tops.

I thought about a PT T/A also. Not a bad idea.

didnt understand the not a real TATA if its got the 403 ;)

SE's and TATA's what ever the motor/trans combo, are special cars as they are and should be left as they are for all to enjoy..imho

Sounds like a cool project..good luck with it 8)

if you want to trade a tata for a really really solid bird with a 400 i can do that, and you can do your pro-touring route
