Y88 Canceled when?
« on: June 23, 2009, 05:05:42 PM »
I have a 1978 Trans Am that I was told is a Y88, the cowl tag is long gone but I found the buildsheet.  It was made 05-23, and it has the 50 color code, it had gold WS6 rims, but I cant see any Y88 code, could this be one?

My cowl tag did not have a Y88 designation either, best way to confirm that it is a Y88 car is to have a PHS done on it.

Explain this. How does PHS have all this information? How to they obtain that information? And how come we can't just get it ourselves without having to pay them to do it?

I have always wondered the very same questions.  I hope someone here has the answers.

If Y88 is not on the buildsheet, it is not a Y88.

It takes a lot of manual labor of going through Pontiac's old records. These records are not on computer, it's usually on MF, which can be quite time consuming.  I'm simply happy to have them around as a reliable source of info.

Yes, PHS documents are not just simply a matter of putting in your vin# and viola! It is a time consuming process that i am glad this group is still able to do. So I glady pay the $55.00 to validate my cars.

If the buildsheet matches the car, but doesn't list RPO "Y88"...then you do not have a Y88. (sorry to bear bad news)

yes both of my y88's build sheets clearly had read y88 on the sheet one was built in norwood and one was built in van nuy's and neither had the y88 stamp on the trim tag neither did they say ws4 they both simply stated -- -- there instead

Everything was printed on like this

This one's mine, and That's what they all look like except for the different options like T/A or Formula or Esprit or whatever. If it's a t/a it's ws4, if it has the performance package it's w72, if it's got the suspension stuff it's Ws6, etc etc. If it's a gold special edition it's got Y88 (printed on), there's a deciphering thing on the 78ta.com actual site (not the forum) to help you decode everything.

There is typically some handwritten numbers scribbled on buildsheets, but not RPO codes.

Yeah that's what i thought too. What did they write by hand on there Jeff? Never saw handwriting on my build sheet.

the handwritten numbers were just total units that went down the assembly line  (buildsheet bingo)
