How Much SEM Do I Need?
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:26:32 PM »
Hey guys, I got all the interior hard parts out of the 76 and will try to order some SEM dye this weekend. Im wondering how much I need. Im doing

•2 rear armrests
•2 Sail Panels
•2 Seatbelt Covers
•2 Door Pulls

Fbodywarehouse sells it in kits of 3 cans paint, 1 can clear. Is that enough

That should be plenty...color change or just a color refresh?

Color Change for the most part. The 76 interior is black, my new 79 is tan. Its missing those interior parts other than the door pulls. They turned a pinkish color from sun exposure.

Oh and while we're at it, how do you remove the ashtrays from the arm rests? I want to take them out so I don't paint over them and clean them up a bit while they're out

They're are tabs holding them in place...you can bend them back to remove the ash tray assembly (you'll see them when you view the panel from the back)

Oh and one last question, where can I paint them? Should I do it inside or will outside work? We don't have a garage or shop so I might have to do it in the backyard. If that's not a good idea I suppose I could wait until we go over to my aunt's house and do it in her garage

I'd recommend doing any spraying in a well ventilated area...either the Aunt's garage or outside (beware of insects landing on/sticking to wet panels though haha)

With A color Change I used the SEM flexible primer as well as the adhesion promoter.  Also as far as where to paint I did mine outside with old Wire coat hangers bent to whatever shape I needed for the part.  It dries fairly quickly so you can move them somewhere they can dry without "Bugs" or any other things you don't want sticking to them.   Take your time and PREP PREP PREP!  Pics for us Nosy TA owners too! :D

scrub your ashtrays with steel wool to shine them up.  i lightly
sanded my plastic too in places where it was needed, but not
enough to remove the texture finish.  steel wool is a great friend.

Oh Sorry forgot about the ashtrays?  Just a second.... ok Put them in a str8 White vinegar solution over nite and maybe 2 nites if really bad.  Get yourself a small wire detail brush and scrub them off after taking them out.  The rust and crud should come off with ease!  Then after you wash with dish saop and dry them, take a bottle of Nail polish clear and coat the inside lightly for protection and appearance.   Works like a charm.  If you don't have a sister or Mom with nail polish I suppose you could use the Auto Touch up stuff or buy some.  Good Luck!

1 can did 2 sail panels, the seat belt retract cover and both side panels in the back seat.  3 cars should do the whole interior.  I am not sure why they recommend adhesio promotor for the color chanfge, it's the same material.  I sent from Navy blue to Firethorn and it covered very nice in 4 coats on my sail panels.  All the parts for 3 light coats and one heavier coat for the last one.
