I am restoring my 78 trans am , and one trip to a local outdoor carshow someone told me I might have a Y88 SE edition Trans Am.
If someone could take the time to tell me if the Build sheet is telling me I have a Y88? I did notice it is in one of the options thats for sure but at the bottom it also says WS6 in the design.
Please let me know.

WS6 was a suspension package. But if you read down the last column of option code you do have Y88 listed.
Congrats!
-
Interesting..... well I thought that WS6 in that small graphic..... w in w's and s in s' etc... meant I have a Ws6
I just thought it had to be a Y88 in large text in order to be one. I am also trying to figure out from the cowel plate and other areas if for sure I do.
help help...
thanks again joker..
Chris
Check out the pics I posted. In Photo post area.

You do have the WS6 package too. ;) As well as power windows, T-
Tops, rear defogger, 400/4spd (with a block heater) and AM/FM/Tape. Nice combo! :D

Wow I just looked it up in the coding area and my car came with 8 track..lol
Is there any other Y88 owners know other ways I can verify if this is a Y88 for sure
-
Yes, order your PHS docs.
-
Yeah, other than the build sheet PHS is the only other way to verify having any of the S/Es whether black or gold. ;)
But with this on your build sheet I don't see that there's any question.

Yes you do its right there under the Y's.
-
Only 1267 made ... yeah, you need to make it right and restore it back to what it should be ...

-
Well thanks.... how did you figure out those stats? "1267".
Could this car actually be that rare... and be worth something good one day?
Did you take a look at my cowl and build sheet... do I for sure have a Y88?
Thanks.

:( lol

All build sheets tell the story of your transams history. This says its a special edition then it is.
-
how many y88 auto's were made?
-
7,399 documented in 1978
-
As long as the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the buildsheet you posted then you have a Y88. Congrats!
Now restore it to its former golden glory and drive it!! :)
-
Thanks Brian C. This is good new to hear. Yes they do match.
I am just trying to figure out if this engine is what came in this car.
i have a feeling it did not. Does the engine #'s have to match the VIN at all?

You can thank Larry as he pointed it out first :)
Yes, the last few digits - I think the last 5 but don't quote me on the exact number - should be stamped on the block. Check your post regarding the engine as I believe Jeff posted up some pics as to where to look to see if its numbers matching.
Mine was and I tucked that block away in my basement for safe keeping.

RE: on the good job, larry

Now I'm curious. I want to see a picture of this Y88. The engine shot in your other thread looked like the car was black instead of gold :-\
-
It is ... some idiot painted it black. I think he's checking the block to the VIN but it seems he has a Y88 with a 4 speed.
-
I am the "idiot" I have a Y88 apparently and I never knew... and when I started restoring it.... we painted it black with the pin stripes to look like tha bandit.... now..... too late :(

-
It's also a Canada, Car. Which is even more rare...
-
No need to keep rubbing salt in an open wound. What done is done but hopefully the car gets returned to its former glory as you simply don't see that many Y88's out and about any more.
Which reminds me...I need to go hug my Y88 and reinstall its cowl data plate :)

I agree - enjoy it the way it is for now. One day down the road you may want to paint it gold again, but for now you have a one off!!
-
Oops .... sorry. I should've read the thread a little closer.
Keep it the way it is ... drive it, enjoy it. You know what you've got now so don't hesitate to ask any more questions. Just realize some of us are blind and stupid and don't follow threads that well ;)

Okie guys so I just realized that my "rare" Y88 has everything original except.......
I was looking into the engine carefully and I have a XA engine code and the date stamp says D267
Meaning I have a 1977 engine L78... !!!! Now what? Can I still find an original engine for this and be the matching codes for this car....The engine that was in my Y88 before was a WC engine code.
-
Good luck on the engine find. It'll be a needle in a haystack as you won't know who pulled it or where it ended up. Best bet is to enjoy it as is as its period correct (or darn close anyways.....it needs to be gold again :) )
-
You could find another WC coded engine if you look around. To be even closer to perfect would be to find one dated within a few weeks before the date your car was assembled that would be on your cowl tag. Then the only thing that wouldn't be right is the VIN stamping on the block, but those are hard to see. ;)

-
That looks great I want it!!! Looks so clean so s.e cars came with the gold front radio door? Where can I find one of these ? I think the code on my build sheet says ur1 I think
-
my car is a 79 and was orderd with this radio. there was one on eBay last week. it sold for like 60 bucks. on mine it is UM2
(http://www.78ta.com/gallery2/main.php/d/20735-1/build+sheet+radio.jpg)
-
No, the SE's did not come with gold radio doors on them. That is just a discoloration due to age and time.
-
I found the radio my car UM1.
I have a guy that restores them and cleans them all up like new, and even adds the RCA's and an AUX input for ipods etc.
Let me know.
Christopher.
