Our new 78 has a 3—1/2 tall scoop. We were thinking we had an aftermarket "taller" than normal scoop because of this picture,
or maybe we're measuring it wrong?
Because then we came across this

I think you have an aftermarket shaker. The horizontal ribs on all the factory shakers I have seen are thicker than your picture. Your picture the horizontal ribs almost look non existent and are not perfectly uniform like factory.
When you look inside the shaker from the air cleaner, what does the finish look like? Can you post a pic from the underside?

x2 and have a look inside to see who cast it, think the late 70's used Barnum Bros, plus GM number.

In case you didn't find out, 3-1/2" is the correct height for a late 77-81 shaker, NOT 2-1/2 as in that photo.

I think hitman's measurements were for the opening, not from bottom plate to top of shaker. A 78+ has a slightly larger opening 2.5" vs the 77 2" opening, or 3.5" from bottom to top vs 3.0" bottom to top. Pick your reference point essentially.
