Performance
« on: September 02, 2011, 08:12:55 PM »
I've got an 80 T/A, 400 thats 30 over, 6x 8 heads that hasn't been cut that i know of, summit 2801 cam, Edelbrock performer, 650 edelbrock carb, longtubes, th350, 342 gears (soon to be 308). I've got the motor out doing a rear main and cleaning everything my question is what should this set up run like, its  been so long since I drove it i don't really remember what it ran like and it was never running right then. Is there anything I could do while its out to wake it up a little more. thanks

I am not like some of the members on this site: I don't know ever characteristic or specification of ever cam at the sight of a part number. So I cannot tell you what your cams range is right off the bad, but the best thing you can do is make sure what your cams power band is and match your rear gears to that.
Removing the 3.42 might hurt more than help performance, but will increase mileage/engine lifespan.

Next I would toss the carb you have for at least a Q-jet. Holley's work but your motor may not need one9once again depending on your cam).
You may have downgraded the carb, the Q-jet flows 750cfm, with yours at 650. However that is not everything, at the end of the day, your carbs build is almost as complicated as your cam/valvetrain. It takes some knowledge, some math, and some money to get the right combo.

There is a lot you can do with what you have, but you seem to have only gone half the distance. Buying the cool parts and installing is only half the battle. The real fun starts when you need to tune everything to work together and efficiently.

petty good power 2801 is like the 068 cam from Pontiac with more lift. I would get a 77-79 qjet 800cfm. get it tune to this engine with a foctory intake. I will rock pretty good.
