air cleaner boostin HP?
« on: June 07, 2006, 11:06:03 PM »
alrite yea i have a 301 in my t/a clone, and dissapointed in the power it gives. I cant find a intake manifold from like summit or jegs or anything, but would this air cleaner go on my 301 with the "non functional" shaker that it of course has and really boost it up 15 HP?

just replacement of your stock filter for a K&N will add a little(stress:little) HP, if you can use a different air cleaner base and can use a taller filter and an K&N x-treme air lid, it'll boost up your cfms and you'll gain more hp, but it won't work with the stock air cleaner base as the lid won't clear the carb and the cleaner"bolt "isn't long enough . All this will run at least a couple of hundred bucks for some hp and minimal mileage improvment.Cut out the back of the shaker and you'll get more air and a little more hp, but in my opinion, still not enough for all the $$ and time spent.
peed limits....they're just suggesstions,..right?

K&N filters, especially the Xtreme lids do NOT add horsepower.
Look at a K&N filter under a bright light and see the porocity of the material.
I will not use them as they allow fine grit to pass through the filter media.
Pull the K&N filter off of an air cleaner housing and wipe your hand across the inside base and you'll find out.

Any extra air flow to the carb will add some hp, though it may be small due to the constraints of the rest of the intake system. After all, it is an AIR engine , not a gas engine, and more air means more power.
