OVER HEATING

 HAVE A 1977 TRANS AM THAT IS STOCK WITH A 400 MANUEL 4 SPEED WE PUT A WHOLE NEW COOLING SYSTEM IN IT LAST  YEAR NEW CLUTCH FAN OVERSIZE ALUMINUM RADIATOR AND WATER PUMPAND IT STILL PEGS OUT THE GAUGE AT 220 IT DOES NOT BUBBLE OUT BUT YOU CAN SMELL IT GETTING REAL HOT AND IT STARTS GURGELING ,ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APRECIATED

Get a second opinion on the temp gauge, they are common. And make sure thermostat is correct.

Timing too retarded can cause overheating too I believe.

Do you have a proper fan shroud?  One that is as large as the radiator and as small as the fan? The purpose of a fan shroud is to funnel the air through the whole radiator.  If you don't have a shroud that covers the entire radiator...air will go around it instead of through it.

If you do not have a proper radiator shroud THAT is your problem. Either put it back to the the original configuration or fabricate a custom shroud. 

I live in Phoenix and have a factory setup on my 79 with a 403. I routinely drive in 1100 heat and I have never had an overheating problem; either in town idling in traffic or on the freeway.
