Gold SE T Tops?
« on: October 15, 2007, 01:22:15 PM »
A 79 SE I recently bought appears to have gold(ish) Fisher tops.  I have 2 TA's with Fisher tops and I can really see the difference.  Did all 79 SE's come with a gold tint?

Thanks!

No. Gold tops would be for a Y88 I believe.

Here's a couple pix.  I'll try to get one later of a regular fisher top with one off this car to show the difference... it's just a slight difference... a gold tint.

I know Michelle would die for a set of gold t-tops for the Y88 they are restoring out there in Washington.

Here's a couple pix for comparison I took out one of my 81 Fisher tops.  The drivers side has some pretty nasty scratches... i tried to get a couple good shots of that.

Jeri - you're supposed to pick them up, not drag them across the driveway :)

LOL... Yeah... I know... but i'm short!

I wondered tho if they can be restored/saved... they aren't really deep scratches...

Jeri,

You could probably use a very fine rubbing compound to remove the scratches IF they're not that deep. Do not use any kind of machine other than your hands while doing this though as you do not want to heat up the glass and cause it to crack.

If it works on a computer monitor it should work on a t-top no problem - they're both glass and I did this on a monitor a while ago...

Do you (or anyone else) think that the process of trying to rub out the scratches might take off the gold color?  How is the glass colored?  Is it like a mirror where the "color" is on the back of the glass... or is it embedded somehow?

I agree with everyone above... yes, the tint is on the inside.... yes don't drag the t-tops shorty...... yes, they were for a Y88 (and did any Camaro's come with them?).... yes, have a glass company look at it, they will be able to tell you if the scratches can come out.

I'd go with the hotties - who needs tops anyway  :)
