I've seen something similar before as one of my college roomates had an older land yacht which had a gauge like that. Can't remember which make/model it was but definitely wasn't a firebird.

Interesting to say the least. Wonder if its aftermarket??

No, that's a factory option.  My sales literature for Firebird in 1975 shows it.  That was the first year for it -- dunno if it was the last or not.  In 1975 the big push was on for fuel economy and this was one of GMs responses.  It showed manifold vacuum, the idea being that "green" denoted high manifold vacuum and thus good fuel economy, while "red" indicated low manifold vacuum because your foot was in the accelerator and your mileage was suffering.  Dodge had something similar that caused lights on the top of the front fenders to illuminate when mileage was "optimal", IIRC.

I heard about them but never saw one either.  I'd rather have a tach though.

It reminds me of the Prius.  It has a display that gives you the gas mileage at the current instant.  I was in one with a friend and as he accelerated the gas mileage read something like "8".   I made a comment about it getting 8 miles per gallon and he switched the display off.  I think he thought I was slamming his Prius.  I was actually thinking....if his 50 MPG car gets 8 while accelerating, my Trans Am must get 1...or less!!!!

But that cluster would be nice to have on the shelf.  I've been looking for one at the salvage yard but haven't come up with one yet.

I seen one in a Monte Carlo around that year.

I'm like you, just give me a tach.
I know how much gas I'm using everytime I hear that 4-barrel open. ;D

That would be a cool gauge just to have as a separate, small gauge, maybe in place of one of the small vents in the dash.  It's a novelty item but I like it.

I'm with you Rich, I'd love to have that.  I wouldn't install it, but it would have a place of distinction in my office!

They were available in 1978 but not on the firebirds.
