Topic: Which Carb?

I need to replace the carb on my car and am wondering which one I should go with.  I have a friend who has 3 that should work and I can have one.  Which would be the best for a 79 400 Pontiac motor?

Edelbrock 1406 Performer Series 600cfm

Edelbrock 1806 Thunder Series 650 cfm

Edelbrock 1813 Thunder Series 800 cfm

#4...Quadrajet. Pick one up as a core off Ebay and have Tom (Maryland Bandit) rebuild it with a Cliff Ruggles kit.

Otherwise the 800cfm would feed the engine the best as the 600cfm units would choke the engine. Remember in stock trim the 400's came with 800cfm carbs from GM. GM didn't put them on there just for bragging rights

Shaker hood?
if so..you don't have any real choices..they are mostly the same.
If you don't have the shaker..go Holley...and avoid the headaches.

bigger is not always better there is a trend to running smaller cfms at the track

Not always, when mine was on dyno it lost 15hp going from 800 qjet to 750 Holley, and then 40hp again going with 600 Holley, had no legs at higher end

Savingthebird, yes it does have the shaker hood.  Gilbert, thanks for the article.  I think I will give the 800 a try and if thats too much I will swap it our for the 650.  Thanks everyone for all the input.
